His dedication and sincerity to the ideology of BJP began in his early childhood. His father Sh. Rambhakt Bhagauati Prasad Upadhyay has been a RSS Swayam Sewak since long and introduced his son Sh. Sanjay Upadhyay who has been associated with the RSS shakhas with his father since the age of six years. Sh. Sanjay Upadhyay was brought up in Mumbai. He did his schooling in Vernacular medium from B.L. Ruia High School, graduation from Mithibai College, and post graduation in M.Sc. (Physics) from Wilson College.
